This month, Hofstra Law students attended the Women in the Courts event hosted by the Nassau County Women's Bar Association. Legal professionals including alumni Judges Denise Sher '78, Tammy Schwitz Robbins '89, and Lisa Cairo '02 met with students over lunch to share their journeys in the legal field and give invaluable advice. #lawschool #womeninlaw

Recently, third-year Hofstra Law students Benjamin Fishkind, Nicole Kaeka, and Rebecca Zerbo visited Benjamin N. Cardozo High School to speak to students about the Fourth Amendment and share their law school experiences. “It was really wonderful having the Hofstra Law students come to speak to my juniors about search and procedure, what law school life is like, and even a little bit about undergraduate life,” says Alissa Amato, Cardozo High School teacher. “They showed them that there is no one clear path to get to law school and that they can pursue different areas of law no matter what they choose to pursue in college. Today the Hofstra Law community welcomed California Supreme Court Justice Goodwin H. Liu for the 2023-2024 Howard and Iris Kaplan Memorial Lecture. The insightful presentation focused on the connection between implicit and structural bias and the ways we as a society can mitigate their effects through structural change, laws, policies, and thorough data collection. #lawschool

Third-year Hofstra Law student Emanuele Putrino was presented with the Concurrences Best Student Article Award at the 2024 Antitrust Writing Awards ceremonyfor his paper "Tesla, Let Me Fix My Car: The Right to Repair and Need for a Balance Between Public and Private Enforcement." "My hope is that this article raises awareness of the issue and influences policymakers to change how we approach the right to repair. It was a pleasure attending the ceremony in Washington, D.C., where I connected with scholars, practitioners, and lead antitrust enforcers of the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice. Last night, the Hofstra Law community celebrated the fifth anniversaryof the Hofstra Law Pro Se Legal Assistance Program at theCentral Islip Eastern District of New York federal court. The programseeks toenhance access to justice and improve the litigation processfor litigants and the Court. Since its inception, the program has provided free limited-scope legal services to hundreds of self-represented litigants.Judge Gail Prudenti, former dean of the Law School,was honored in recognition of her contributions to establishing the program.#lawschool #LongIsland

Hofstra University has announced the appointment of Jenny Roberts, professor of law and co-director of the Criminal Justice Clinic at American University Washington College of Law (AUWCL), as dean of theMaurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University.Roberts will join Hofstra University on July 1, 2024.Roberts has over 22 years of experience in legal education, with the last 14 years at AUWCL. During that time, she has served as an associate dean and a faculty board member for the Criminal Justice Practice and Policy Institute. She has served as chair of the law school appointments and the intellectual life committees and has participated on numerous university-level committees at American University.We are excited to welcome Dean Roberts to the Hofstra Law community!
