So delighted to welcome Jenny Roberts as the new Dean of Hofstra’s Law School. It is especially exciting to know that an institution with its reputation for criminal defense will be led by someone who made clinical work a big part of her career.

"There are many factors to consider in order to find the right law school. The school may be public or private, large or small, faith-related or not, stand-alone or university-affiliated. The choice of the “right” law school is subjective. Examine your own needs and find schools that match up." - Law School Admission Council Law School Admission Council (LSAC) BIED Society Kenneth T. More than two dozen major U.S. law firms sent a letter on Nov. 1 to the deans of the nation’s top-ranked law schools expressing concern over a wave of antisemitism and intimidation on university campuses amid the latest fighting between Israel and Hamas. The 27 firms urged 14 of the top-ranked law schools in the U.S. to take a 'unequivocal stance' against discrimination and harassment and said they 'look forward' to learning from law schools how they are addressing the situation on their own campuses.A spokesperson said on Nov. 2 that senior chair Joseph Shenker spearheaded the letter to the law schools known in the legal industry as the 'T-14,' as ranked by U.S. News & World Report. Other signatories include some on the nation’s biggest and most profitable law firms, including ; ; ; and .University of California, Berkeley law dean Erwin Chemerinsky said on Nov. 2 that he welcomes the firms’ statement condemning antisemitism, Islamophobia and racism but was unclear on next steps.'I am unsure what the law firms are asking law schools to do, but it is certainly our role to protect the freedom of speech of all of our students, while also ensuring that there is a conducive learning environment and preparing students for the practice of law at the highest levels of the profession,' Chemerinsky said.Read more: https://lnkd.in/dYTiFSdb#legal #lawfirms #lawschools #antisemitism #islamophobia

Legal education has to be responsive to societal needs, regulatory shifts, and, of course, changes in jurisprudential norms.Regardless of the merits of looking to the past to adjudicate current disputes, historical analysis has become a core part of appellate advocacy. Now's the time to update law school curriculums accordingly. Check out my St. Mary's Law Journal paper on the need to teach law students the tools of historical analysis and, in particular, the history of America's Foundings.

Go Professor (now Judge) Lee! Professor Lee trained me how to interview and prep clients, how to prepare for trial, and how to think thoughtfully about how my practice will impact the world around me and my clients’ lives. Now she’s out there applying those principles from the bench. Reassuring news!

There’s since been two graduating classes and that means the first class is entering the practice of law as 1st year associates this fall. I want those of us already in the legal profession to recognize our responsibility to these new lawyers and their educational background. For the first time, the duty to take seriously the practice of Indigenous laws - that is laws made from within Indigenous communities and nations - is coming straight into our offices en masse, in the form of these new lawyers, who will become our associates and, eventually, partners, principals, managers, and directors. It is our responsibility to not minimize or brush aside the laws and principles they raise from their legal education, and to use our existing privilege and power to support and encourage them to find ways to continue and implement them. Not just those of us in my ‘practice area’ of Canadian ‘Aboriginal Law’, but those of you also in family law, criminal law, and all other areas of practice. As the years go on, this will be easier, there will be more of these graduates, but for now it is imperative that we do our best to support them.
