I was just curious about all registries in the United States. What would you say is the biggest registries by size and by credibility? Is NKC a big registry or a small one? Are they bigger than UKC or are they smaller? What is the order of size between AKC, NKC, PKC and UKC.

I can't give you an exact order, partially becouse it is a complex anser . First of all it depends on your geographic location and dog style. AKC is the oldest but each club can only have 1 or 2 licensed trials a year plus there are several different formats, LPH, LPR, SPO, and some different types of brace plus in the SPO there are differrent organizations that promote different things in a hound. PKC is pretty new to the beagles and thus pretty small. NKC is the registry for ARHA wich is pretty big and covers a large geographical area, but as with AKC it has several different formats Little Pack[LP] and Progressive Pack[PP] are the big two. Last but deffinantlly not least is the UKC. The UKC is large and rappidlly growing and for the most part you can go anywhere from New Yourk to Oregon and run the same rules. The only exception beeing the fev large pack or small pack hunts these hunts have a different set of rule but still promote the same type of hound. One of the things I've found only in the UKC is that alot of different style dogs can compete and win.

If I had to take a GUESS I would say all breeds included it would be AKC,UKC,NKC,PKC..........beagles only AKC,NKC,UKC,PKC......in those orders.
AKC is the oldest, largest, most recognized and possibly most over-rated registry. UKC is the 2nd oldest and 2nd largest all breed registry. NKC has only been around 30-35 years I think. UKC registers 250,000 dogs total per year compared to AKC's 1,124,000 dogs total and 49,000 Beagles registered in 2002! NKC and PKC dont mention numbers.
Credibility.......its 2004, there is no such thing, just show them the $$$
Just my guess! Randy

My imput, AKC does not register 1,124,000 dogs. A few years ago they were registering 1,300,000 dogs. In 2003 they registered 915,000 dogs. That is a loss of 400,000 dogs in just 5 years or roughly one third of their business. To be official here is how they are ranked by registrations AKC, UKC, PKC, NKC

From the AKC Web site
Financial Report Mr. Stevens, Chief Financial Officer, gave a financial update.
Dog registrations totaled 915,671 in 2003, which was a 4.9% reduction from 2002. Total litter registrations in 2003 were 423,761. This amount was 3.9% below 2002.

Here is how it really is. AKC is the biggest and the oldest. They register around 900,000 dogs per year. Down over 400,000 registries from a couple of years ago. They are circling the bowl. At this rate how long will it be until they are no longer the biggest? They are almost all pets or show dogs. They do have some field trials but the people running in them will someday realize that they are trialing under a registry that supports anti hunting. don't believe me? Well their big dog show that they advertise so much is sponsored by iams. We have all read what Iams is all about with their partnership with the Humane Society of the United States. Therefore my opinion is that the AKC Beaglers are contributing money to an organization that is assisting a company to take their hunting rights. AKC is also as I have heard before "a great place to hide from the competition". If you don't have their papers you can't compete. Registries that let everyone in are a better place to find the best dog. If you think a little blue and white piece of paper makes you better, you are sadly mistaken.
UKC is the second oldest and second largest registry in the country. They have for years primarily registered coonhounds. They have in the last 15-20 years branched out into things like beagles, show dogs, retrievers etc. From what I see the majority of their dogs are working type dogs rather than show dogs and pets. They have by far the best pedigree systems in place and the fastest and most accurate registry. The money you spend with them is better spent as you get way more for your money with UKC. Their beagle program is growing and starting to spread across the country from what I can see.
PKC is a 99% coonhound registry. They offer money prizes only and that is their difference. They are not as big as UKC but they do have a lot of hunts. Most of them are small week night hunts as this is not offered by another registry currently. Average event size is probably less than 10 dogs. Their big hunts are big, but their small hunts are really small. They have a cur program too that is very small. They are also starting money beagle events. Tehy just got started and they seem to have a few clubs holdng their events. Time will tell if their copy cat rules will work. You can plan on the fact that if their beagle program ever takes off that they will put a hunt 50 miles away from every major AKC, UKC and NKC event on the same days. That is how they do business.
NKC has been for years basically a "bottom feeder" registry. The best decision they ever made was to buy ARHA. This probably quadrupled their registry. Before the buyout they had a half a$$ cur program that had 80 dogs at their biggest hunt of the year. They had a coonhound program that was and is still a joke. They register some bulldogs. By far, their Beagle program pays the bills. If is wasn't for the beagles they would probably be out of business by now. Even though they are the smallest of the registries they have a pretty good following in the beagle world. From what I have read they have a lot of clubs holding a lot of events. I have heard that their entries at their local and big events are declining.
So to sum it up her is how they rank by dogs registered
AKC UKC PKC NKC
As far as Beagle programs AKC NKC UKC PKC
