Quick Christmas Slime Recipe for Kids {Elf Fart Slime!} (1)

When we first made a lot of slime back in February for Valentine’s Day, my kids had so much fun adding the ingredients and mixing up the gooey stuff.

However, I wasn’t a fan of the mess created by the food coloring we used to dye the slime pink.

As I thought about what our Elf on the Shelf, Jack, could put in my kids’ advent calendar, I wondered if I could quickly make some Christmas slime that’s less messy.

Additional criteria: the slime must smell better than glue, and not include shaving cream, Borax or food coloring.

While working from home one day, during my lunch break I scrounged around my craft stash and pantry for the ingredients to make glittery, peppermint-scented slime for Christmas.

This is such an easy Christmas slime recipe that I know your kids will love because my little girl discovered a funny (unintentional) slime side effect: teeny-tiny elf farts!

Let’s get started.

Making Christmas slime is super quick once you’ve gathered your ingredients. If I wasn’t snapping photos between steps, it would have taken less than 10 minutes to make.

We start with my basic slime recipe and add some fun Christmas ingredients.

I used peppermint extract to make peppermint-scented slime, but I’ve seen other recipes that use essential oils. It’s really up to whatever you have in your pantry.

Here’s what you need to make Christmas slime with your kids (or for your Elf on the Shelf to deliver):

The Easy Recipe for Quick Christmas Slime

Step 1:

Squeeze the entire bottle of glue into a bowl, preferably one that’s ceramic or glass so it will be easy to clean when you’re done.

Step 2:

Mix 1.5 teaspoons of baking soda in with the glue, then add the peppermint extract once the baking soda and glue are totally combined and mix well.

Step 3:

Now it’s time to add the slime accessories! Toss in some glitter, your pompoms, and confetti and mix it all together with the spoon.

Step 4:

Once you’ve added all the slime “fillings” it’s time to add 1 tablespoon of contact lens solution. This must be the last step, otherwise, the fillings won’t properly stick to the slime.

First, use the spoon to mix the contact lens solution and sticky glue, then use your hands to scrape the slime off the sides of the bowl and knead it all together.

If the slime feels too sticky, continue to add a small squirt of contact lens solution until the slime is the consistency that you want.

As you squeeze the slime, you’ll notice a little snap-crackle-pop sound!

Elf Slime that Farts!

Yep, you read that right. As a family with two elementary school-aged kids, bodily functions are a hot topic in our house.

So it was no surprise when my 7-year-old daughter, upon squeezing the slime and hearing snap-crackle-pop, immediately squealed “Mommy, it sounds like elf farts!”

When I pointed out that the slime smells like peppermint, her reply was (sensibly), “Well of course it does, it’s from Jack”.

So there we have it, our elf, Jack, produces peppermint-smelling farts.

What causes farting slime, anyway?

My guess is that the pompoms create air pockets that pop when you squeeze the slime, and the chunky foil confetti create adds a crunching sound.

It’s fun and silly and made my kids so happy!

To make it look like Jack made the elf slime, I put him in a bowl filled with pompoms, the empty glue bottle, a spoon, and sprinkle of confetti. This elf activity took two minutes and surprised the kids!

Follow the math in my bulk slime recipe if you want to use this Christmas slime as a party favor, or as a holiday activity in your classroom.

Simply put the slime in a plastic sandwich bag, squeeze the air out so the slime won’t dry up, and tie the bag with some cute ribbon.
