I’ve been a long-time tofu fan (see all of my tofu recipes here), but smoked tofu is a more recent discovery of mine. Ever since I first tried it, I’ve been truly obsessed and I try to keep a package in my fridge at all times.

Its delicious smoky taste adds so much flavour to all sorts of meals – you’ll never be frustrated with bland tofu again (we’ve all been there). It’s also SO convenient to use, as you don’t even need to cook it, season it, or marinate it!

If you’re in need of some inspiration for how to eat smoked tofu, I’ve rounded up 12 easy + healthy smoked tofu recipe ideas for you below. I hope this helps 🙂

What is smoked tofu?

Smoked tofu is similar to extra firm tofu in texture, but with a DELICIOUS smoky flavour.

Traditionally it’s smoked over tea leaves or on wood chips, or it can be made with liquid smoke.

Depending on what brand you purchase, the techniques for getting that smoky flavour may vary.

Does smoked tofu need to be cooked?

Nope! You can eat store-bought smoked tofu directly from the package. There’s no need to cook or press it, as it’s already been cooked for you.

Since it’s way more flavourful than plain tofu, you don’t always have to add extra seasonings or marinades. I’m obsessed with how convenient it is.

That said, you can absolutely add it to dishes while cooking (like stir-fries or curries). It’s just not absolutely necessary to do so!

Where to buy smoked tofu

You can find smoked tofu along with other packaged soy ingredients (like regular tofu or tempeh) in the refrigerated section of your grocery store.

It should be available in most large grocery chains, but you can certainly find it in more health food stores (like Whole Foods) or specialty stores and online retailers (like Vegan Supply).

You’ll find different brands available depending on where you live, but my personal favourite is this local Vancouver-based smoked tofu company called oomé. They’re a woman-owned small business that kickstarted my obsession with smoked tofu.

oomé’s “maple soy” flavour is my absolute favourite! You’re welcome to use my discount code WALDER25 for 25% off an online order at vegansupply.ca (expires May 31st, 2023). They ship worldwide, so if you’re not based in Vancouver you can try them too 🙂

How to eat smoked tofu

  1. On its own. Yes, you read that right! Sometimes I love opening a package of smoked tofu, cutting some cubes, and digging in. It’s kind of like eating smoked cheese and is a great source of protein to add to a snack plate. Pair it with some crackers, raw veggies, and dip!
  2. In a stir-fry. Add smoked tofu cubes to a stir-fry made with grains (like quinoa or rice) and veggies (like broccoli, peppers, carrots, and zucchini). You can add in a splash of additional seasonings, like soy sauce or another stir-fry sauce. That said, because smoked tofu is so flavourful, you often don’t have to add much more!
  3. In a salad. Add tofu cubes directly from the packaging into your favourite salad. It would go well with a lighter green or crunchy salad (you can swap it for the crispy cooked tofu in this miso tofu salad) or in a heartier salad as well (like a kale caesar).
  4. In a sandwich. Cut smoked tofu into long slices and add it as a protein source in a veggie sandwich. I love pairing it with hummus, roasted peppers, avocado, lettuce, and dijon mustard! You can think of it replacing the smoky flavour and protein content of bacon or smoked cheddar.
  5. In a pasta. Follow the directions for my tofu tomato pasta, but use crumbled smoked tofu instead! It adds an extra layer of flavour and tastes incredible – I just tried this myself recently 😉
  6. In a taco or wrap. Cook crumbled smoked tofu in the oven or on a pan and use it as a filling for a yummy taco, burrito, or pita wrap!
  7. In a salad roll. Cut tofu into strips and add it to a refreshing salad roll, using rice paper. Add raw veggies, like cucumber and carrots. Pair with a delicious dip, like this miso peanut sauce.
  8. In a noodle bowl. Cook cubes of smoked tofu and add them to a noodle bowl (or even a noodle soup).
  9. In a grain bowl. Similarly, you can add cubes of tofu (either from the package or cooked) to your favour grain bowl or buddha bowl. Pair it with roasted veggies and a yummy sauce, like this lemon herb tahini or this curry tahini dressing.
  10. In a curry. Use smoked tofu as the protein in a cozy curry dish (see my tofu coconut curry for ideas).
  11. In a tofu scramble. Replace eggs with crumbled smoked tofu for a flavourful tofu scramble! You can see my curry tofu scramble for inspiration.
  12. With veggie kabobs. Add cubes of smoked tofu and veggies (like peppers or zucchini) on skewers. Cook on the grill!
